Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. The best book on this subject is by Marianna Caplin, entitled Eyes Wide Open. She deftly outlines the spiritual traps that accompany the full awakening process. It's worth the read.

And, yes, these traps turn us all into arrogant jerks... that's their point and their learning. We are never 'done.' Enlightenment is a first step, like a first black belt. What one has accomplished is only to learn the curriculum. NOW comes the real practice, and it takes a lifetime... or longer.
